Scenic Driving South Carolina

Family Journeys...
A valuable guide for driving South Carolina, "Scenic Driving South Carolina" gives my Texas-based family with deep South Carolina roots information we need to explore the homelands of our parents and grandparents. For several years, family members have planned to discover the South Carolina so embodied in our lives and in the spirit of our family. Our first journey embarks through information gleaned from the pages of "Scenic Driving South Carolina."

We value especially the 21 detailed maps packed with essential features, one for each of the scenic drives. The background information included in the "Introduction," the "Attractions," the "Neat Places to Stay," the "Restaurant and Shops," the "Tours and Nature-based Services" sections of the book also demonstrates the vitality of the state.

More than 40 appealing photographs add merit to "Scenic Driving South Carolina."

Our journeys continue: We native Texans will explore for several years the present day 21 "scenic drives" of our grandparents' and mothers' indigenous to South Carolina. This book is invaluable.

Schaum's Outline of Italian Vocabulary
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Trade (01 June, 1987)
Authors: Fiorenze Clark, Conrad J. Schmitt, and Fiorenza Consonni Clark
Average review score:

Excellent supplement to studies...
I've been studying Italian on my own to review (I had 2 years of it in college). I have been using this book to solidify my vocabulary. It's been wonderful. Each chapter drills the vocabulary of a particular subject through several types of exercises, including fill in the blanks, multiple choice, short answer, matching, and reading comprehension. There are drawings illustrating scenes (i.e. in the aiport, etc.) and those are very helpful. I'm already using words I hadn't known were so useful! A great book to supplement textbook learning as well, I'd bet.

Intro to Science Dream
I am teaching Physical Science, an intro to science freshman course, at a high school in NH. I asked my students to find some information on who discovered the parts of the atom for homework. Most of my students didn't have much success with the internet, their science text book, or other text books. However, one of my students brought in this book. It had a full page on the information that I was looking for, plus other references on other aspects of the atom. The atom wasn't the only topic that I was impressed with. In general it contains an excellent, basic description of most fundamentals of science. For a teacher that is trying to find new ways of presenting information, it is truely a find. It is also a great companion for the student that might have a little trouble in the sciences. There are wonderful, full-color illustrations to accompany simple, yet well written and content filled text. In short, I was very impressed with this book. Not to mention the author was also involved in another of my favorite books "The Way Things Work". If I could require this book for my students, and reccommend it to all science teachers, I would.

A perfect gift for art and jazz lovers alike.
This is a beautiful book in every way. The selection of art juxtaposed with the intriguing range of literary excerpts combine to make the reader do exactly what the editors want: to "see" jazz. I bought extra copies as Christmas gifts.

Seeking Western Waters: The Lewis and Clark Trail from the Rockies to the Pacific
Published in Paperback by Oregon Historical Society (June, 1903)
Authors: Emory M. Strong, Ruth Strong, Meriwether Original Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition Lewis, and Herbert K. Beals
Average review score:

The journey was wonderful despite, putrid elk and mosquitos,
Wandering around West Yellowstone, Montana waiting for the weather to clear, I discovered this treasure. I wanted to find out how Lewis & Clark managed without a trailer equipped with microwave, Gortex and DEET. Manage they did. The thrill of discovery outweighed the difficulties. This was my first read of the corps of discovery. It serves as an introduction. The selected sections of the journals are followed by explanations and interpretations. The black and white photos of the described sites and plants complement the text beautifully. The feeling of "being there" comes off the page. The maps are somewhat difficult to follow. As an introduction and a pick-up during the Montana thunderstorms, it made a fine addition to a well rounded vacation.

Selected Poems
Published in Textbook Binding by Arkham House Pub (June, 1971)
Author: Clark Ashton Smith
Average review score:

Fantasy's Master Poet
If you know the work of Clark Ashton Smith only through his otherworldly -- and often acidically ironic -- short stories, then you've not seen his best, in my opinion. If you're a lover of language... an epicure of the fantastic in verse... then find a copy of Smith's SELECTED POEMS and buy it, whatever the price. This volume, more than any other of Smith's works, exemplifies his unending battle against all that is small and petty and mundane, and opens to the reader's soul vistas of unimaginable wonder. There have been many very fine poets of the outre: Lovecraft, Howard, Tierney, Bierce, Fryer, Brennan... but Clark Ashton Smith towers above them all. If I had to choose two books only from my not inconsiderable library, and see the rest consigned to flames, those two would be the Bible and Smith's SELECTED LETTERS. 'Nuff said.
